It’s noble that Ubisoft thought of the average person who doesn’t have time to sink tens of hours in a short amount of time, but there’s little reward for those who can spend more time in the world. Consequently, the only reason to keep playing is to farm for ETO (the in-game currency) because it’s too exhausting to grind for Influence to recruit more operatives.Įssentially, earning one rank a day will allow you to reach all 50 ranks, which unlocks the Influence and cosmetics that come with it. Everything in Legion online revolves around giving you experience to earn these ranks, but once you’ve reached the rank cap, all you’re left with is the meager daily Influence and Hotspots. The only way to earn Influence is by leveling up ranks in the battle pass, finding Hotspots that might give you a small chunk of Influence, and completing the one daily challenge that awards a meager sum of points. You can’t find Influence in abundance like you could with Tech Points in single-player. It’s not as daunting as it sounds since tech is much cheaper, but you have to earn “Influence” (online’s version of Tech Points) in order to unlock the tech and new recruits. Nothing you did from single-player carries over to online, so you have to earn all your tech again and recruit new agents to DedSec. Online is set up with a free Fortnite-like battle pass system, and nearly all the rewards run through this battle pass. It sounds like it should keep things interesting for a long, long time, but where Watch Dogs: Legion online stumbles is its reward structure. The online mode, released on consoles first and PC second (I played on PC), features randomly generated solo missions, matchmade cooperative missions, a spiderbot battle arena, and the formidable Tactical Ops. It’s been four months since the main game launched, and with major content due after this, Watch Dogs: Legion Online feels a bit like appetizers arriving too close to the entrée.After 40 hours, maxing out the available ranks, and spending over €100,000 of in-game currency buying clothes, I can confidently say Watch Dogs: Legion online lacks any reason to return, despite enjoying maxing out nearly everything. What will really bring me back, however, is a new game-plus mode, or a bona fide story expansion, both of which have been promised. There is a new world of NPCs to snoop on and recruit, and hell, I love the darts game in Watch Dogs: Legion, so playing that against other humans hanging around in-world should be a fun diversion. When it launches March 9, I doubt I’ll use Watch Dogs: Legion Online as much more than an adjunct to the main single-player experience. I was not much good at this (using a gamepad against mouse-and-keyboarders) but others will be, and it’s a nice chaser after taking on the raid. It’s a more straightforward multiplayer game type, spiderbots skittering all over a map littered with boosts and health regenerators, in a standard free-for-all format. Other diversions in Watch Dogs: Legion online include the spiderbot arena, which is pretty much what it sounds like. Watch Dogs: Legion: How to build a great team Our job was to hack, disable, and bring down three combat drones, the toughest of the airborne enemies. “Leader of the Pack,” as the first Tactical Op is called, began with us in a locked-down part of London away from the main game. It is raid-scale in difficulty, too, at five chapters, and my team and I couldn’t make it past the first one. Then there was the Tactical Op, which is basically Watch Dogs: Legion Online’s raid. Patience, using the spiderbot, casing the area by jumping from security camera to security camera, none of these skills really had much application in the co-op missions, so none of those missions really paid off with that unique Watch Dogs feeling of invincibility and satisfaction. It worked, but it felt like we blundered into our team victory.Īnd I really don’t mean this to sound boastful, but Watch Dogs: Legion is one of the few, current AAA games I feel I’m very good at. I hacked one and flew it around lobbing tear gas grenades until it was destroyed, by which time someone else on the team had completed the objective. But just as I was about to electro-punch a nearby patrol and slip over the railing, someone went Leeroy Jenkins on us, and now the drones were in the air.
